UPDATE on INDONESIA: Saturday February 20 1999 Indonesia : Up to 20,000 people who fled from religious rioting on the Indonesian island of Ambon are holed up in dirty camps facing food shortages and health risks, experts said yesterday. Gerhard Ritter, consultant for the Caritas Catholic relief organisation, said displaced residents were staying in military bases, churches and mosques outside Ambon city after their homes were destroyed in January riots. "The most crucial situation is for the children, pregnant women and old people. They have no sugar, milk powder or meat," said Mr Ritter. Authorities say 105 people died in the riots between Christians and Muslims. Non-government sources in Ambon claim 250 people were killed. The latest clash in Ambon started with Muslim groups attacking Christians with petrol bombs and torching homes.

In spite of all the violence, the Christian community is determined to be a witness for Christ in the middle of financial chaos, social upheaval, and violent persecution. Christians are "rising to the occasion," German evangelist Suzette Hattingh. Hundreds of churches are operating food kitchens and feeding programs in villages and towns. Business professionals are using their talents to help the church, and nominal believers have a fresh zeal for service, she said. "Churches are packed -- prayer rooms crowded with people pressing in with passionate prayer and fasting."

Pray for endurance for our fellow Christians as they serve God in this turmoil in their own country.
