INDONESIA (JAKARTA): Indonesia's spice islands remained tense after recent Christian-Muslim violence and hundreds of people were still missing, most of them believed to be hiding in the thick jungle on the island of Buru, west of the provincial capital Ambon. There were no reports of fresh violence on Thursday 13 Jan but the situation remained dangerous on the largest island, Halmahera, in the north. More than 1,500 people have died in the past year in the once-idyllic region in Indonesia's worst religious war. Human rights groups put the death toll at thousands. The unrest has sparked daily Muslim protests in Jakarta demanding a jihad, or holy war, against Christians in the Malukus. More than 300 Muslims protested outside the vice-presidential palace on 13 Jan demanding Abdurrahman's deputy, Megawati Sukarnoputri, resolve the conflict quickly. Singapore's Straits Times newspaper yesterday quoted Abdurrahman as saying reports of a brewing holy war were exaggerated and hinting the violence in the Malukus and the separatist province of Aceh would subside within two months.
