5.        Christians in Northern Nigeria Face Growing Hostility - Fourteen churches are threatened with demolition, non-Islamic law courts may be closed, and there are fears of violent reprisals against Christian and animist ethnic minorities in the wake of riots in Lagos, reports the Barnabas Fund. Elsewhere in northern Nigeria, hundreds of anti-riot police and soldiers were deployed in majority-Muslim Kano and Jigawa on Feb 4 and 5 as the authorities put their forces on alert fearing reprisals against mainly-Christian and animist ethnic minorities in the wake of riots in Lagos. Over 100 people were killed and more than 430 wounded in several days of savage riots in Lagos, Southern Nigeria, which began on Feb. 2.

6.        Churches Threatened with Closure in TURKEY - As many as 40 different churches have been threatened with closure since December 2001 by police and local authorities. Official letters have been sent to the churches demanding that they cease all activities and threatening to fine and imprison church members if they continue to attend. Some churches have received threatening phone calls and frequent police visits. Until the end of last year most Christians in Turkey had been free to meet and worship without fear of harassment or intimidation. Then in November and December several disastrous television programmes and newspaper articles attacking Christianity created a stir amongst the majority-Muslim population, and it is this which seems to have prompted the crack down. Pray for wisdom and guidance for the Church in Turkey at this difficult time.  Church leaders are proceeding with caution not wishing to see previously good relations damaged even further. Pray that this controversy will die down, and that any anti-Christian sentiment will be forgotten.  Pray that Christians will again be able to meet freely without fearing harassment by the police or local authorities.
