The Burnhams have been members of NTM since 1985. In the letter (before Nov 23), Martin says that he and Gracia are "very weary, but God has protected our health and (we) have not suffered major sickness or injury. We do need medical attention though. Both said food is often scarce, with little protein. "But God always sends a provision and we've always had water. "Don't wish to complain - just thought you'd want to know our situation. It doesn't mean that I've lost my faith - I'm just incredibly sad, especially to be separated from the kids." One of the recently released hostages said that she is "so proud of Martin. He regularly taught us Bible stories, led us in songs and prayer. He has been engaged by the [kidnappers] on numerous occasions in discussions concerning Christianity and Islam, but he has always been so kind to them." 27 Nov: The captors of Martin and Gracia Burnham allowed them access to a local television crew on the island of Basilan. In an interview released Tuesday 27 Nov, the Burnhams called for foreign intervention to end their plight. "We know that the Philippine government is doing everything to rescue us," Martin Burnham said. "I don't want to sound disrespectful, but it's not working." His wife appealed for the help of any government" to negotiate their release.
