June 28, 2002 Senegal ** Mob Storms Church; Forces Closure ** From Barnabas Fund News Service -- A local politician at the head of a mob of young men stormed a church in Dakar on May 23. Insulting and assaulting Christian worshippers, the youths, armed with knives and stones, drove them out and occupied the building. The church, which has only recently opened, first encountered opposition from the local politician when it met with officials to receive approval before holding services. Having failed to prevent Christians from establishing the church local conservatives took the law into their own hands and decided to assault the church claiming that Christians were making too much noise during services and disturbing the local community. Despite the involvement of the police and local authorities, and a reconciliation meeting in which church leaders apologized for any noise they may have inadvertently made, the church building has still not been returned to the congregation. The incident is the latest in a series of several attacks upon Christians and their churches that have taken place in different parts of the country in recent years. Church leaders fear the incidents may be part of a concerted campaign to put pressure on Christians by extremist factions who want to make Senegal an exclusive country. Tensions were heightened for Christians in the country two years ago when the President announced that "Senegal will be 100 percent in three years." June 14, 2002 ** Vietnam: 14 Tribal Pastors Sent to Undisclosed Prison ** A contact told Christian Aid on Monday that 14 Vietnamese pastors were arrested in that country's Central Highlands in the last two weeks. The exact location of these pastors is not certain. This brings to 26 the known number of Christian pastors laboring in Vietnam's rural prison system, including 12 who remain in the notorious brick kilns in the North. The recent arrests were in retaliation for the Vietnamese Christians who recently obtained refugee status after fleeing to Cambodia and were given clearance to immigrate to the United States, the contact said. "The greatest obstacles faced by the Vietnamese people who desire to come to the Christian faith include ancestor worship and the brutality of the local authorities," said International Christian Concern. "People who become Christians are discriminated against and may be watched, fined, they lose their job, their children are not allowed in school, their movements are restricted, and they are omitted from any government assistance during floods that commonly plague the country." Christian Aid has connections to get aid to Vietnamese Christians for the purpose of purchasing Bibles, radios, bicycles, motorcycles and helping families who have fled persecution or whose pastor-fathers are in prison. |
